The Nottingham Cricket Lovers’ Society has joined forces with cricket author Andrew Hignell to assist in the launch of his new book, detailing the life and times of international umpire Nigel Plews.
A Tall Story tells the tale of how Plews, who spent 25 years with Nottinghamshire Police, became one of the most respected umpires in world cricket.
Despite never having played the game himself at professional level, Plews enjoyed a 17-year stint as a First-Class umpire, standing in 11 Test matches, 16 One-Day Internationals and a number of major one-day games and Cup Finals. After being diagnosed with kidney cancer, he passed away in 2008.
The book draws heavily from the diaries and notebooks which Plews assiduously kept throughout his distinguished career, starting with his days umpiring in league cricket in the East Midlands.
The book’s launch event will take place via Zoom on Saturday 7 November from 10am. Speakers will include First-Class umpire Neil Bainton, author Andrew Hignell, members of Plews’ family and his former colleagues at the Police.
