Liam Patterson-White returned career-best bowling figures but Nottinghamshire fell to defeat on the third day of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.
Patterson-White, who yesterday made a score of 53 with the bat, took all three Hampshire wickets to fall on the third day and collected five for 41 as the hosts, resuming on 133 for seven, were bowled out for 178.
That left the Green and Golds a target of 250 for victory, but despite an enterprising 33 from Ben Duckett, Liam Dawson’s return of five for 45 meant they were ultimately dismissed for 127, falling to defeat by 122 runs.
Overnight rain initially delayed the start of Day Three, with the covers firmly affixed in place and persistent drizzle continuing until an hour before the scheduled start time.
An eventual abatement in the weather did permit a 1pm start, and Patterson-White wasted little time in removing Brad Wheal and Keith Barker, stumped by Tom Moores and caught by Dane Paterson respectively.
He followed that up with the final wicket of James Fuller, edging to Steven Mullaney, to seal his second first-class five-for, with Hampshire having added 46 to their overnight total.
There were 56 overs remaining when Green and Gold opening pair Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed emerged to begin the chase, and they initially started with a calm accumulation of 20 in the opening ten overs.
Hameed’s dismissal at the hands of Mohammad Abbas ended the opening stand, but Duckett’s busy innings, featuring several sweeps, kept the score moving along, and Notts took tea on 45 for one.
Duckett continued his swift innings after the break, but a testing spell from Abbas ultimately proved his downfall, as moments after surviving an lbw appeal, he was pinned in front to leave Notts 64 for two.
The earlier haul of Patterson-White had showcased the inclination of the pitch to begin turning, and Dawson and fellow spinner Felix Organ exploited that as the Green and Golds then experienced a chastening afternoon.
Once Slater had nicked Dawson to Nick Gubbins for 25, he and Organ, who took three for 22, bowled in tandem in the late afternoon sunlight as Notts lost six wickets in 19.5 overs to fall to 97 for seven.
Joey Evison held out with a resistant 22 down the order, becoming only the third Green and Gold batsman to reach double figures, but his dismissal in the final knockings of the day confirmed defeat for the visitors.
