Skipper Steven Mullaney dedicated his century to a family friend after his career-best 192 enabled his side to take a sizeable first innings lead down at Hove.
The all-rounder first entered the fray at 52-4, a score that had progressed to 469-8 when he was finally dismissed, as he praised the work of Lyndon James, Tom Moores, Liam Patterson-White and Joey Evison for their parts in pushing the green and golds to 534-9 declared.
The 35-year-old was particularly pleased for his 20-year-old counterpart Evison, as the young all-rounder brought up his first senior three figure score.
