Notts edged their noses in front during the second day of a nip and tuck Second XI Championship fixture against Durham at Lady Bay, rallying with the ball before finishing with a slender lead.
Having finished their first innings on 253 on the opening day, the Green and Golds returned to dismiss visitors for 294 -with Jack Peirce claiming three wickets, and James Hayes and Travis Holland two each.
With a deficit of 51 to surmount, Ben Martindale and Dane Schadendorf amassed an unbeaten opening partnership of 88 to see the hosts conclude the day’s play with a lead of 47.
Persistency paid dividends in the opening blows as wickets proved stubborn yet regular for Notts. The visitors’ first five wickets fell for 130, with a partnership of 40 for the fifth wicket the largest stand mustered by the top order.
Hayes and Holland did the majority of the early damage, but neither could prevent a seventh wicket partnership worth 110 between Luke Doneathy and Haydon Mustard.
It was Farhan Ahmed who eventually did for the former, caught behind for 88, with Durham’s final four wickets falling for 39.
And with what transpired to be 26 overs left of play, Martindale (30*) and Schadendorf (42*) made their way steadily to their closing total, striking ten boundaries between them to lay the beginnings of a third innings platform.
