Nottinghamshire CCC is saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.
Queen Elizabeth II attended many Test matches over the years – with her late husband, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, known to be a keen cricket-lover – and visited Trent Bridge for the venue's 1977 Test between England and Australia.
The engagement formed part of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, with the royal party heading for Nottingham after visiting nearby Derby, Ripley, Chesterfield and Mansfield, and before conducting the official opening of the Queen's Medical Centre.
Her Majesty’s arrival was a little delayed as huge crowds on roads approaching the venue led to the late arrival of the party.
The party were presented to the competing sides and match officials upon their arrival, with Nottinghamshire's Derek Randall and future Notts player Mike Hendrick amongst their number.
“It was such an honour to meet the Queen,” said Dickie Bird, who umpired the match alongside David Constant.
“It was a wonderful day – one of the most memorable of my life. The crowd all behaved excellently – they all stood and clapped."
