Nottinghamshire set Durham an imposing target of 404 on the third day at Lady Bay, with Dane Schadendorf and Calvin Harrison each striking centuries in the third innings.
434 runs were added throughout the course of the three sessions, for the loss of five wickets, as the hosts made their way t0 404/5d before the North East outfit responded with an unbroken opening stand of 78.
The visitors will return on the final day seeking a further 326 runs.
Resuming 88/0, Schadendorf and Ben Martindale added 42 before the latter was pinned lbw by Jamie Cairns.
A 93 run partnership between Harrison and Schadendorf, extended the Notts lead, however, and when the wicket keeper-batter departed for 101, a stand of 169 between Harrison - who finished on 138 - and Tom Loten, 79, stretched the Green and Golds’ ascendency.
In the 16 remaining overs after declaration, Jamie Crawley and Ben McKinney proved proactive for the visitors, withstanding spells from James Hayes, Loten, Jack Peirce and Harrison and striking at a touch under five runs per over.
