The county's campaign, which will end with the winner-takes-all showpiece, began with another instalment of a timeless rivalry.

A grudge match with its origins in a decades-long fight for the throne of England, the battlefield on this occasion was that of York CC.

And while India's Washington Sundar provided a sprinkling of subcontinental stardust, it was Danny Lamb, born and bred in the Red Rose County, whose three wickets gave Lancashire early momentum. Set 225 to win, Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon led the way in a three-wicket win.

And so began a three-match winning streak, as Derbyshire were comfortably dispatched on home soil before Rob Jones steered his side to a six-wicket victory over Worcestershire.

A see-saw South Coast encounter would be less straightforward – the visitors lost their top three without troubling the scorers, and even a Jones fifty couldn't elevate the target beyond Hampshire's reach – but Lancashire's march to the knockout stages was only temporarily nudged off course.

A comprehensive nine-wicket triumph over defending champions Glamorgan preceded a high-scoring blockbuster with Northamptonshire at Blackpool – Keaton Jennings starring with a ton as 370 was chased down by the seaside.

Lancashire's final group game against fellow finalists Kent would see the Southern side triumph – in a nailbiting encounter which bodes well for the entertainment value of the upcoming Trent Bridge showpiece – before Notts narrowly fell short in a Stanley Park quarter-final runfest.

On the Blackpool turf where he first earned his stripes, Steven Croft starred in the play-off triumph over the Outlaws. So when he fell cheaply in the semi-final – and when Bohannon's departure left Lancashire 67/5 – opponents Sussex must have scented success.

Cue a quickfire ton from Dane Vilas, with leading wicket-taker Liam Hurt among those chipping away with wickets at crucial times to trigger pandemonium and a place in the Royal London Cup Final.
