Notts bowlers’ best efforts were repelled by a resolute Hampshire display on the final day as they claimed victory by five wickets.
The bowling attack had enjoyed a fruitful return on day three and their disciplined unit performance left the hosts in with a chance of victory ahead of the final day.
With the two sides finely balanced throughout - on a wicket which proved a challenge to batters in both camps - Hants needed 85 runs, and Notts five wickets, for the win as Dillon Pennington opened dangerously from the Radcliffe Road End.
But Fletcha Middleton and James Fuller, the pair in the middle who saw out the evening session on Sunday, remained vigilant and were patient in seizing opportunities to knaw away at their target, while some near-misses - in particular for Dane Paterson - left Notts frustrated in the field.
The pitch showed some variable bounce and the bowlers were on the mark in the opening period, but Hampshire came through that dangerous spell unscathed as Fuller took charge against Calvin Harrison, scoring 21 runs off the leg-spinner’s over to put his team in control.
Captain Haseeb Hameed tried varying bowling and field combinations to no avail as Hampshire took the victory without losing a wicket on the final day, despite a valiant effort from the bowling unit.
The result sees Notts add three bonus points to the Vitality County Championship table, with their Division One tally now standing at 68 points after six matchweeks.
Attention turns immediately to a trip down to New Road, where Worcestershire will host the Green and Golds for four more days of enthralling red-ball cricket, from Friday 24 May (11am).
