Lyndon James led Nottinghamshire’s resistance after Hampshire’s seamers shone in the morning session of the Vitality County Championship at Trent Bridge.
The all-rounder struck an unbeaten 92, including consecutive stands of 69 with Calvin Harrison and 59 with Olly Stone.
That rearguard followed the seam quartet of Muhummad Abbas, Kieth Barker, Kyle Abbott and James Fuller reducing the hosts to 50/6 by lunch.
But Notts’ stoic late middle-order partnerships took the hosts to 212/9 by close, with three wickets falling in the final 72 overs of play.
Hampshire had two on the board before Notts scored, Abbas finding Ben Slater’s edge and the shoulder of Will Young’s bat to have both caught inside six overs.
Joe Clarke then edged to third slip off Abbott with the score on 17, with 20 more added before Barker had Haseeb Hameed caught behind, a first dismissal in four innings for the Nottinghamshire captain.
James Fuller got in on the act by uprooting Tom Moores’s leg stump with a big inswinger before Abbas returned to grab a third scalp as Jack Haynes top edged to first slip.
James and Harrison steadied proceedings, though, guiding Notts past three figures and towards the tea interval before Liam Dawson’s left-arm spin skidded one through Harrison’s attempted pull.
James continued to dig in, reaching his second half-century of the season off 135 balls with his fifth boundary, finding some dogged support from Stone, who made First-Class high score of 90 against Lancashire in Notts’ last fixture.
The pair added 59 before Stone departed for a 107-ball 24, Liam Dawson at second just about getting his fingers under a nick offered off Abbas, with the second new ball, took his fourth, before the day closed with Dillon Pennington leg before to Abbott.
