Keaton Jennings led Lancashire’s charge with 91 on the first day of the Vitality County Championship fixture at Trent Bridge, but a plucky Notts showing reduced the visitors to 306/8 by close. 

Olly Stone continued his return to action with a hostile four-over spell before tea in tandem with Calvin Harrison, the duo picking up a scalp apiece in a profitable period of the day for the hosts.

Dillon Pennington then partnered Stone with the second new ball, claiming three wickets to take his personal tally for the season to 13.

Dane Paterson and Lyndon James picked up the other wickets to fall, with the former dismissing Kiwi batter Tom Bruce for 71 in the dying embers of the day. 

It was testament to the Green and Golds’ resilience that, despite a day which saw spells dominated by the bat, a rate of a shade over three runs per over was maintained.

After Luke Wells was caught sharply at second slip by Harrison off Paterson inside the first hour, it wasn’t until the penultimate ball of the session that Notts earned their second - that of Josh Bohannon, trapped in front by James for 35

An attritional start to sessions bookended by wickets proved the theme of the day, with Jennings, who faced 180 deliveries and hit 15 boundaries, just nine overs from the tea interval before he reverse swept Harrison to Tom Moores, and Balderson (38) three overs closer before departing lbw at the hands of Stone. 

The 30-year-old bowled 21 overs across the day, displaying a robustness which earned him a recall to the side at Edgbaston two weeks ago.

His second new-ball spell with Pennington - which began with Lancashire threatening to accelerate at 269/4 - extracted characteristic bounce and carry and turned the tide of the day. 

The latter was the beneficiary of his own unerring consistency when George Bell and Matthew Hurst edged to first and third slip within 15 balls of each other. 

As Bruce watched on, Tom Hartley then found Harrison at second slip to reduce the visitors to 289/7, with 16 more added before Paterson struck in the penultimate over of the day.
