We are pleased to be able to confirm details of our Young Officials Course for 2024. This will be open to 14-19 year olds and will be FREE of charge.
The course will consist of two parts:
Face to face ECB Umpiring Course
Online ECB Basic Scorers Course
The reason we are setting the course up like this is to allow youngsters to begin on the respective ECB’s officiating pathway should they wish to continue to further pursue either umpiring or scoring (or both!)

The ECB Umpiring course is designed to give new umpires the key skills, knowledge and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket. No prior experience of umpiring in cricket is required before attending the course. It is the first footstep on the ECB’s new officiating pathway.
This course will cover the following topics:
- Understanding the role of the umpire
- Gain a basic understanding of umpiring the game
- Answering appeals and the common methods of dismissal
- How to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the game
- Judging whether or not it is safe to play
ECB Basic Scorers Course (Online)
The ECB Basic Scorers course is designed to provide you with all the skills needed to start scoring. You don’t need any prior knowledge of scoring to participate.
The course covers the following topics:
- Scoring symbols
- Umpire signals
- Dismissals
- Laws of the game overview
