Trophy Triumph Ten Years Ago
As they prepare for their final farewells to Trent Bridge, Stuart Broad and Samit Patel can reflect today (22 September) on the tenth anniversary of The Outlaws victory in the 40-over Yorkshire Bank Trophy final at Lord’s.
Taking three wickets apiece, the two helped the Green and Golds to their first knock-out title for 24 years as Glamorgan were skittled for 157 in 33 overs. Samit Patel, with 3-21 from his seven overs, was Man-of-the-Match.
Skipper Chris Read top-scored for Notts with a run-a-ball 53 and all the batters bar Broad got into double figures as they notched up 244-8 in their forty overs. Graeme Swann, like Broad brought into the team for the Final with their England commitments finished for the season, combined with Steven Mullaney in a rapid 42-run stand to ensure that Glamorgan were set a challenging target.
That was the cue for The Outlaws international quality attack to take over. Harry Gurney nipped out opener Mark Wallce with the first ball of the second over and then Broad, Patel and Ajmal Shahzad, who also took three, shared the next nine wickets evenly amongst them.
Samit took three quick wickets as the Welshmen went from 108-2 to 118-5 and then Stuart and Ajmal did the rest to ensure a comfortable 87-run winning margin.
As tributes pour in to the two departing heroes, that day at Lord’s will figure high in the memories of players and fans.
