Adam Voges returned to Trent Bridge in 2012 for his fifth stint as the county’s overseas player. The Western Australian ensured his place in the hearts of all Nottinghamshire supporters with his magnificent century at Old Trafford which helped the side to the points they needed to lift the title.
Despite his good record, Adam took a while to find a settled pace in his country’s Test squad, a situation that benefitted Notts, who were able to rotate him and David Hussey as their overseas player.
He did, of course, come good with a vengeance – until a certain Steve Smith came along, Voges' test match batting average of 61.87 was second behind Don Bradman among batsmen who had finished their career and played a minimum of 20 innings.
Adam Voges made his Test debut for Australia in June 2015, aged 35, and scored a century on debut against the West Indies. He recorded a second century in November 2015, against New Zealand, and later scored 269 not out, 106 not out, and 239 in consecutive innings from December 2015 to February 2016, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs between dismissals in Test cricket.
For Trent Bridge cricket lovers his most memorable innings was one of his briefest – snatched up by that barely believable Ben Stokes catch in the middle of his ex-teammate Stuart Broad’s 8-15 romp through the Aussie Ashes team in 2015. A year later, Voges was included in the 2016 ICC Test Match Team of the Year.
In 44 First-Class matches for Notts, he scored 2,736 runs, with a top score of 165, an average of 45.60; he made four centuries, 20 Fifties and took 52 catches. His List-A average was even better – 46.75 – and he also made 103no; in T20 games, Voges made seven Fifties, with 82no as his best innings.
His slow left-arm orthodox bowling was useful, particularly in limited-over cricket but it was his batting that left such a positive impression with fans throughout the world.
Adam Voges stepped down from domestic and international cricket at the end of the 2016-2017 Sheffield Shield season but continued for a further year playing in the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash.
Since ending his playing career, he has moved into coaching. Voges was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the 2020 Australia Day Honours for "service to cricket."
