Six years younger than his brother Samit, Akhil Patel was born in Nottingham on 18 June 1990 and followed his brother to Trent Bridge in 2009, having played briefly for Derbyshire two years earlier.
A left-handed bat who bowled left-arm unorthodox (also called the ‘Chinaman’), Akhil made his First-Class for Derbyshire in April 2007 at the age of just 16, making 31 against Cambridge University UCCE. For Nottinghamshire he played in five First-Class matches, making a top score of 69no, his only half-century; in List-A cricket he played 11 games, top score 41; he didn’t bowl for the first XI and only once in white-ball cricket, taking 2-34 against Hampshire.
He was released by Notts at the end of the 2011season and has since played regularly for Kimberley Institute in the local Premier League and for Lincolnshire in the Minor Counties Championship.
