Loughborough-born fast bowler Anthony Alexander ‘Alec’ Johnson played 29 times for Nottinghamshire during the 1960s.
Johnson first played for Notts Seconds in 1961 and was a regular from 1963. His First-Class debut came as a nineteen-year-old against Surrey at Trent Bridge in June 1963 but this proved to be his only senior start that year. He played in a further Championship game in 1964 before appearing more frequently in the following two seasons.
In all, Johnson played in 26 First-Class matches for Nottinghamshire, taking 49 wickets, with a best of 4-13 against Essex in 1965. He had few pretensions with the bat, scoring a total of 273 runs and averaging just 8.80, but did hit 45 in the Championship against Middlesex in 1966. In his three Gillette Cup ties for Nottinghamshire, Johnson took nine wickets including 4-37 at Worcester, again in 1966.
Alec Johnson did not feature at all during 1967 and was released by Nottinghamshire at the end of the season.
After leaving the First-Class game, he made his mark in League Cricket in the North East and appeared for Northumberland from 1968 until 1977, interrupted in 1973 by a brief spell with Durham. Johnson clocked up over 70 appearances in the Minor Counties Championship and played four further List-A matches in the Gillette Cup for Durham and for Northumberland, his final appearance coming for Northumberland against Somerset in July 1977.
