Born on 5 January 1862 in Ruddington, Alfred Price, a right-hand batsman was the son of Walter Price (1834-1894) who played in five First-Class games for Notts in 1869 and 1870 and umpired in 72 First-Class matches between 1865 and 1893, mostly at Lord’s. Alfred appeared for the Colts XXII in April 1882 and again in April 1883. He played for Notts in only three First-Class matches, all in 1887; his debut was at Hove v Sussex in July. Batting at number eight he made 34 in a Notts total of 515. His other games were against Gloucestershire at Trent Bridge, scoring 0, and v Yorkshire at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, scoring 3 and 2. He never bowled for Notts.
Alfred Price had made his First-Class debut for the North versus South at Lord’s in June 1884, appearing in the same fixture a year later. He also appeared for Liverpool and District v Australians at Aigburth in 1884, making a First-Class best score of 37, and a made a solitary appearance for Lancashire versus Oxford University in the Parks in May 1885. In seven First-Class matches he scored 110 runs @9.16.
Amongst his professional engagements were Liverpool CC from 1883 to 1888 and Bedford County Modern School in 1889. He also appeared for the MCC in 1889. He died aged 80 years on 21 March 1942 at Mumps in Oldham, Lancashire.
He was from a cricketing family. As well as Walter senior, one brother, Frederick (1857-1927), played one First-Class game for the North in 1887 and appeared for Staffordshire between 1882-1885 and the MCC between 1885-1887. Another brother, William (born 1859), played two First-Class games for Liverpool and District in 1889; a third, also called Walter, played for Notts Colts in 1882 and 1883.
