In October 2003 Nottinghamshire signed batsman Anurag Singh from Worcestershire batsman on a three year contract. He was rather unfortunate in 2004 in that Bicknell, Gallian, Pietersen and Hussey were successful and injury-free so no real opportunities came for a new batsman in the First Team.
It was not until late in the summer that he took the place of Russell Warren in the Championship and the Sunday League, averaging more than 40 in both class of matches. The arrival of Fleming in 2005 made batting vacancies even rarer and with again no major batting injuries his First XI opportunities were limited. Singh did, though, did play in the Sunday League but failed to hit an individual fifty.
In 2006 his outings with the First Eleven were even more restricted, playing in only six One-Dayers before he suffered a serious shoulder injury which ultimately cut short his playing career.
Prior to joining Worcerstershire, he had played First-Class and List-A cricket with Warwickshire. In a career of 108 First-Class games, he made 5,437 runs at 32.17 with a top score of 187, made for Worcs against Gloucestershire. For Notts, he played 13 Fist-Class games, scoring 633 runs with two centuries - top score 131 (v Loughborough UCCE) - at 35.16; he also played 19 List-A games, top score 78no, one of two limited-overs half centuries, at 36.60.
After retiring from the county game, Anurag Singh played three times for an MCC XI, his last recorded game being back in Nottinghamshire, against Plumptree in August 2015, making 22 in a close match that the hosts won by one wicket.
Anurag Singh, born 9 September 1975 in Uttar Pradesh, India, qualified as a solicitor in 2005 and is currently a partner in the corporate law firm Gowling WLG, heading their India team and the Electric Vehicle Group. He retains some interest in sport - Gowling were official legal advisers to the 2022 Commonweath Games in Birmingham and Singh is a deputy client partner in that work.
