Born on 2 July 1865 in Awsworth, Arthur Dixon Burrows resided in Eastwood during his cricketing career. Selected for the Notts XI v the XXII Colts in April 1887, he gave a most encouraging performance taking 7-20 and scoring 35 in the match, which was more than any other player. He then played for the Colts of North versus Colts of South at Lord’s in May. He made a further appearance for Notts Colts v Yorkshire Colts at Trent Bridge and on 23, 24 and 25 June 1887 he played his only First-Class match for Notts v MCC at Lord’s, scoring 1 and 1 and bowling 0-19 over the two innings.
He was a right-hand batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler who played for Notts Castle CC and for Colne CC between 1887 and 1889. Sadly he died aged just 24 years of lung congestion on 6 February 1890 at Eastwood.
His brother, Robert Dixon Burrows played 277 first-class games for Worcestershire between 1899-1919 scoring 5,223 runs @14.07 and taking 894 wickets @26.40. Robert later umpired in 185 first-class matches including the 1926 England v Australia Test match at Trent Bridge. Their second cousin was George Henry Chambers (1866-1927) who played three First-Class matches for Notts between 1896 and 1899.
