Left-hand bat Ben Compton signed a one-year contract with the Club in October 2019. The 25 year-old is a cousin of former England, Middlesex and Somerset batsman Nick Compton and grandson of former England and Middlesex legend Denis. His father Patrick Compton played three First-Class games for Natal in 1979/80.
Ben Compton, born 29 March 1994 in Durban, attended Clifton College in that city and represented KwaZulu-Natal Under-15s. He played for Wimbledon in the Surrey League for three seasons between 2013 and 2015, playing 33 matches and scoring 1193 runs @54.22.
He subsequently joined Richmond in the Middlesex League where in four seasons he scored 2471 runs @47.51. In 2015 he appeared in the Second XI Championship for Hampshire and for MCC Young Cricketers. Two years later he made a single appearance for Durham Seconds. Compton made eight in a single appearance for Notts Seconds in 2018, an innings victory over Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens in a friendly fixture.
In 2019 he appeared in nine Second XI Championship, six Second XI T20 and five Second XI Trophy matches for Kent and Notts. Including friendly fixtures he appeared in six matches for Notts Second XI scoring 352 runs @58.66 including 134no in a three-day friendly versus Northamptonshire at Milton Keynes.
His good form resulted him in being selected for the first team for the final two Specsavers Championship games where he scored 14 and 13 versus Warwickshire at Trent Bridge and 16no at The Oval.
Like so many other players hoping, indeed expecting, to make their way in the game in 2020, Ben Compton had to sit out most of the season during the Corona Virus lockdown.
In 2021 he played a few first team games without quite making the impact that he would have hoped and his contract, which had been extended after the 2020 pandemic, was not renewed. He subsequently signed a two-year deal with Kent, a county where he played some Second XI cricket in 2019. Ben began his Kent carreer with a flurry of runs and scored four hundreds in his first season with an average over fifty; if the subsequent season didn't quite match those heights, he has certainly shown the form and consistency that eluded him at Trent Bridge.
