Nottinghamshire all-rounder Ben Martindale – son of former Notts player Duncan – signed a one-year contract to keep him at Trent Bridge until the end of the 2023 season, extending his first professional deal with Notts.
Ben, a graduate from the club's Academy, made his List-A first team debut in the Royal London Cup (50-over) against Gloucestershire in August 2022, having proved his worth in the Seconds over the two most recent campaigns. In the 2022 Second XI Championship, the top-order batter amassed 588 runs in 19 innings, his top score of 93 coming in the red-ball contest against Derbyshire in May.
At the annual End of Season Awards Dinner in September 2022, Martindale was awarded the Charles Vernon Price Memorial Plate to recognise his progression as the most improved Academy player.
Ben Martindale started in club cricket in his mid-teens, playing initially for Ellerslie and then Caythorpe before joining Hucknall for the 2022 Notts Premier League season. He progressed through the Notts age-group teams, starting with the Under-14s, before joining the Academy.
In 2023, he played a full campaign in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, opening the batting with Ben Slater. In the first match, against Essex at Chelmsford, Martindale made his maiden First XI half-century and put on 107 with Slater for the first wicket.
Ben and Duncan Martindale are the fifteenth father-and-son pairing to have played competitive first team cricket for Notts – a list that goes right back to the ‘Father of Trent Bridge’, William Clarke whose son Alfred and stepson John Chapman also played for the County. Duncan played 67 times for Nottinghamshire spanning 1985 to 1991.
