Born in Nottingham on 22 December 1882, Benjamin James Hind was a right-hand bat and medium-pace leg-break bowler, who varied his stock delivery with the occasional fast ball whipping back from the off. He also bowled a deadly yorker. His only First-Class match was Notts v Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on 29 and 30 June 1911 when he scored 5 and 23, the latter being Notts’ highest score in their second innings and the Nottingham Evening News commented: “In the unfavourable circumstances under which his innings was played the Waverley amateur (Hind) has good cause to feel satisfied with himself, lucky though he was. But a man wants some luck to get runs against Hirst, Haigh and Co.” Hind also bowled 11-1-42-0. Notts lost the match by an innings with George Gunn and James Iremonger absent at the Test Trial.
His most notable performances were 9.1-2-10-10 for Nottingham Waverley versus Ruddington in 1906, and 8-47 in the Amateurs v Professionals Trial at Trent Bridge.
Hind was a civil servant who resided in Sherwood. He died aged 91 in Nottingham on 1 April 1974.
