Born on 5 May 1902 in Sutton in Ashfield, Bertie Marshall was a good fast right-arm bowler and a useful right-hand bat, he fielded at forward short-leg. He first came to prominence with New Hucknall Colliery CC in 1921 and 1922, heading the bowling averages in the latter year when the side won the Notts Senior League. In 1923 he was engaged at Trent Bridge and made his First-Class debut versus Derbyshire in May, scoring 1 and taking 1-54. In 1924 he played in two county matches at the end of the season, in addition to appearing in all eight of Notts’ Minor County matches.
He left Notts for Perthshire in 1925 and remained with that Scottish county until 1937. For Perthshire v Forfar in 1929 he took 9-18 and versus Aberdeen in the same year took 7-38. In inter-county games alone in 1929 he obtained 56 wickets @4.50 thus creating a new Perth record. His success was such that he was invited to play again for Notts v Middlesex at Trent Bridge in June 1929 in place of the injured Larwood, scoring a career best 36 in what proved to be his final match for Notts. In four First-Class matches he scored 61 runs @15.25 and took five wickets @40.60. His best bowling was 2-39 for Worcestershire at New Road in 1924.
In 1935 he appeared for Scotland v South Africans at Dundee. 1938 saw him as professional in the North Staffordshire League and in 1939 he made four appearances as an amateur for Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Championship. From 1948 to 1967 he was coach at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh. Bertie Marshall died aged 88 on 5 February 1991 in Durham.
