Colin Banton was born in Fish Hoek, Cape Province, South Africa, on 15 September 1969 but has played all his senior cricket in England. He made his First-Class debut for Nottinghamshire in 1995, his first two games being against Cambridge and Oxford Universities; against Cambridge he made 18 and 80no, the latter opening the batting with Matt Dowman, which proved to be his highest First-Class score.
He made six further First-Class appearances that season and finished with 292 runs at 29.20, with two half centuries; in two List-A games, also in 1995, he scored 41 runs, 40 of those in his innings v Lancashire. Banton played more often for Notts Seconds in the Minor Counties competitions and had one outing for Buckinghamshire in the 1996 MCCA Knockout Trophy v Devon.
It is likely that Colin Banton will become much better known for the cricketing exploits of his son Tom – Somerset’s young batsman who is regarded as one of England’s brightest prospects, particularly in white-ball cricket, and already has three ODIs and three T20Is to his credit. A younger son, Jacques, is currently with Worcestershire and has appeared for their Second XI.
