David Jones played for Worksop Town CC from 1931 as a right hand opening batsman and joined the playing staff at Trent Bridge in 1934. At the same time he was a professional footballer, being right-half for Bury. He remained with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club until the outbreak of the war.
He made 24 appearances for the County, scoring 594 runs at an average of 18.00. The only season in which he held a regular place in the First XI was 1938, when he played in 16 matches. His highest score was 60 v Worcestershire during that season, but his best innings, early in 1938 was 58 v Lancashire.
He was praised by one contemporary reporter, ‘Jones is naturally a quick scorer and on this occasion the best compliment I can pay him is to point out to statisticians that he was at no time overshadowed by the debonair Hardstaff’ but his figures do not quite match that quote - a top score of 60 from 38 innings at an average of 18.00 in First-Class cricket.
David Jones was born on 9 April 1914 in Bolsover, Derbyshire and died in Scarborough on 28 July 1998.
