After spending two seasons with Yorkshire Seconds, Leeds-born David Barrington Pennett joined the Trent Bridge staff at the start of the 1992 season, making his Sunday League debut on 21 June that year v Northants at Trent Bridge.
A week later came his First-Class debut v Cambridge University. He was successful enough to be retained in the senior side for the remainder of the summer. In the following seasons however, his main contribution came in the Sunday League and in all he took 41 wickets in that competition at an average of 31.87.
His 1994 season was marred by a stress fracture of the back incurred whist playing in New Zealand during the 1993/94 winter.
Pennett’s best performance with bat and ball both occurred at Chester-le-Street; in 1993 he took five for 36 and in 1995, coming in as last man, he hit his only First-Class 50, adding 85 for the last wicket with Pick and saving the side from complete disaster – the total being 105 for nine when he came to the crease.
David Pennett moved into Minor Counties cricket after leaving Trent Bridge at the end of the 1997 season and played for Cumberland and for Cheshire. In 1998 he was a member of the Minor Counties team that competed in the Benson & Hedges Cup. He retired from county cricket in 2005.
