Yorkshire-born Duncan Martindale made his First-Class debut for Notts versus his home county in the 1985 County Championship and went on to play 55 First-Class games across six seasons, his last appearance being against Oxford University in 1991.
His List-A career started at its highest point – his limited-overs debut coming in the 1985 NatWest Trophy final at Lord’s against Essex; despite 20 from Martindale, Notts finished one run short of their chase. He made a further 18 List-A appearances with the last being v Worcestershire in the 1990 Benson & Hedges Cup.
Although described as a right-arm off-break bowler, he bowled only two overs for Nottinghamshire, conceding just eight runs. He batted right-handed and in First-Class games made 1,861 runs with a highest score of 138, against Cambridge University in 1990, one of four centuries; in List-A matches, he totalled 343 runs with a top score of 53, his only half-century in that format.
Duncan Martindale left Notts at the end of the 1991 season and played Minor Counties cricket for Herefordshire in 1992 and 1993. He went into the teaching profession after leaving Notts and is currently a teacher at Salterford House School, Calverton.
His son, Ben, has made First XI appearances in List-A competitions for the Notts Outlaws, meaning that Duncan and Ben join a list reaching right back to the Father of Trent Bridge, William Clarke, of father and sons to have played for the county.
