Born in New Radford on 19 July 1877, Frank Hawley represented Notts XXII Colts in April 1896 but secured an engagement with Germantown CC of Philadelphia and appeared in no further cricket in Notts during that season. In 1895 he had been a regular member of Messrs. Radford & Cutts CC in Nottingham. Hawley was one of the original members of the Notts ground staff in 1897; he played for the XXII Colts and for the Notts Colts v Yorkshire Colts at Bramall Lane, Sheffield. His Notts debut was v Northants at Northampton in a two-day friendly in May 1897; he then played in another two-day friendly v Staffordshire at Stoke having figures of 3-22 over the two innings. He made his sole First-Class appearance for Notts v Yorkshire at Trent Bridge in June 1897, scoring 1 and taking 1-67 with his fast-medium bowling over the two innings - his lone victim being the legendary George Hirst who he bowled for 5. He also appeared in another two-day friendly versus Northants at Trent Bridge in 1897. In 1906 he rejoined the Trent Bridge staff, but remained for one year only; he appeared in home and away games for Notts Seconds against their Leicestershire counterparts.
A hosiery mechanic, Frank Hawley was for many years a member of TB Cutts CC. He died in Sutton-in-Ashfield on 23 August 1913 aged 36 years.
