Fred Stinchcombe was born on 12 March 1930 at Barnby Moor in Nottinghamshire. He was a right-hand bat and leg-break and googly bowler.
Coming from Retford CC, he made three appearances for the Notts Second Team in the Minor Counties Championship in 1950 and took a total of seven wickets for 189 in these games. He was then selected for his first-team debut versus Hampshire at Trent Bridge on 10 June 1950. Batting at number seven he made 12 and took 1 for 119 in a high scoring draw. Over the next month he appeared in a further four first-class matches including the game against the West Indian tourists, but achieved little.
He returned to the Second Eleven for the rest of the season and had innings figures of 6-102 against Warwickshire at Elm Avenue, Newark-on-Trent. He remained in the Second team at the start of 1951 and after taking 4-83 in a Minor Counties fixture against Yorkshire at Retford was selected in the first team for what turned out to be his sixth and last appearance hitting a career best 48 against Kent at Trent Bridge starting on 1 August but failing to take a wicket. He had scored 87 runs @14.50 and took 4 wickets @134.75 during his brief Notts first-class career. His best bowling was 1-42 versus Derbyshire at Ilkeston in 1950.
In 1952 he returned to Retford CC and later moved to Worksop CC, where he assisted with cricket coaching at Worksop College as well as playing for Clumber Park CC. After a year long illness, Stinchcombe died at his Worksop home on 19 September 1984 at the age of 54.
