Following in your father’s footsteps can be difficult and when your father is George Gunn it is virtually impossible.
George Gunn Junior was a player of undoubted talent and joined the playing staff at Trent Bridge in 1925 having been born in West Bridgford and educated at Nottingham High School. He played with increasing success with the Nottinghamshire Second Eleven and made his First-Class debut against West Indies at Trent Bridge in July 1928 in a team that also featured his dad, George Gunn Senior.
This was the first time a father and son had appeared in a Nottinghamshire side since Richard and Harry Daft in the 1890s. Gunn held down a place in intermittent spells between 1928 and 1930 but became more of a regular in 1931 when he hit an unbeaten century against Warwickshire at Edgbaston and his father also hit three figures in the same innings.
Eleven First-Class centuries and seven five wicket-hauls punctuated his 264-match First-Class career for Nottinghamshire. After his playing days were over, George Vernon Gunn was the coach at Worcestershire from 1953-56.
He died on 15th October 1957 in the Shrewsbury area of Shropshire, aged 52, after a motor cycle accident.
