Giles Haywood made his Sussex debut in their Sunday League side in 1996, aged 17, when he was still at school in Lancing (he was five years in the school XI). His native County, he was born in Chichester, expected much from him but he was unable to gain a place in the Sussex side after joining the full time staff and played just 14 games.
He therefore moved to Trent Bridge in 2000 but fared little better - playing in the second National League game and then in two B&H matches. The last of his five List-A games for his new County was against the touring Zimbabweans, but thereafter his cricket was confined to the Seconds and he decide to retire from county cricket at the end of that season.
