Henry James Porter played in three First-Class matches, including a single county game for Nottinghamshire v Hampshire at Southampton in 1843; in the previous season he had represented the Eleven Players of Nottinghamshire v Six Gentlemen of Notts and Five Players of England. His only other appearance was v MCC at Lords; his highest score was 16 and at Lords he got a duck in each innings
Born in Nottingham in 1810, it would appear that he played in local cricket - mainly with the Hyson Green Club, which played on the Forest - from 1831 to 1854. In contemporaty press reports, Porter is rarely given an initial, though on the occasion when he is, ‘H’ is the only one shown.
He died in Sheffield in 1878, being a publican in that town.
