Born in Stapleford on 29 August 1894, Herbert Turland was a useful right-hand batsman and left-arm medium pace bowler. His first appearance in First-Class cricket was for Derbyshire v Yorkshire on 1 and 2 June 1921; he opened the Derbyshire batting and scored 0 and 1.
In September 1923 he had a trial in the nets at Trent Bridge and was offered a place on the Notts staff but preferred to stay as a professional in the Bradford League. He did, however, play for Notts against the South Africans at Trent Bridge on 14, 15 and 16 May 1924, scoring 29 and 0 and bowling 2-0-14-0. Turland also played one match for Notts Second XI, against Lancashire in the Minor Counties Championship in July 1924. when he made 5 in each innings and took two catches - one off the bowling a certain Harold Larwood, who made his first team debut the following month.
Herbert Turland died on 23 May 1973 in Redruth, Cornwall, aged 78.
