New Zealander Ian Butler joined Nottinghamshire for the T20 campaign of 2013. With Counties allowed two overseas players for the competition, Notts added Butler to their T20 squad alongside Australian David Hussey.
A fast bowler, Butler made his First-Class debut for Northern Districts in November 2001 and his first Test appearance just four months later against England in Christchurch. He played in eight Tests, 26 One Day Internationals and 19 T20 Internationals for his country, taking 75 international wickets in all formats. He had previous experience in the English game with Gloucestershire and Kent and was touring with New Zealand when signed by Nottinghamshire.
Butler made his debut against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge in late June, just after he appeared for New Zealand in T20 Internationals against England at The Oval. He appeared in all but one of Notts’ games in a T20 season which saw them reach the knockout stage. In 10 games, Butler claimed 12 wickets, with his best figures of 3-23 coming in the quarter-final loss to Essex.
Ian Butler returned to England in 2014 to play briefly for Northamptonshire but retired from cricket during that season.
