A miner from Kimberley, John Drury played four First-Class matches in his time with Notts, three in the County Championship of 1899 and one, against the MCC, in 1902.
Although described as ‘a fair bat’, his record did not illustrate that – he batted three times for just 21 runs, 19 of those in one innings v MCC. He also bowled right-arm fast pace, though without much greater success, taking four wickets (best 1-1 in his debut match v Lancashire at Trent Bridge), at 17.75.
He also played for the East of Scotland against the 1901 touring South Africans whilst engaged by Grange CC in Scotland but had begun his career at the other end of the country, playing for Truro CC in 1895.
John Joseph Drury was born on 28 May 1874 in Noel Street, Kimberley and died in Saddleworth in the West Riding on 16 October 1919.
