John Hogg was born in Woodborough on Valentine's Day, February 1818. He played in three First-Class matches for Nottinghamshire, one in each of 1858, 1859 and 1861, acting as wicketkeeper, and two for North v South and v Surrey, both in July 1861. He appeared both for and against William Clarke's All England Eleven on a number of occasions and once for Notts v XXII Colts. His brief First-Class career produced 78 runs at an average of 13.00, top score 31, made against Surrey at The Oval in June 1861.
No details of his earliest cricket have yet been found but, having played for Arnold in 1852 and 1853, he appeared for Burton Joyce where he was at one time landlord of the Cross Keys and, later, of the Wheat Sheaf Inn. In 1852, however, his occupation is given as ‘farmer’.
His eldest daughter, Annie Maria, married the Notts and England cricketer John Selby; his son, John Henry Hogg appeared in one minor match for Notts.
John Hogg died in Burton Joyce on 30 October 1885.
