A useful right-hand bat and good wicket-keeper, John William White joined the Trent Bridge staff in 1902. He appeared in the Colts XXII in 1901 and 1902 and v Yorkshire Colts in 1902, 1903 and 1904. His first-class matches for Notts were limited to three: v Leicestershire at Leicester in 1902, v Gentlemen of Philadelphia at Trent Bridge in 1903 and v South Africans at Trent Bridge in 1904. He scored 43 runs @8.60 and had nine dismissals, including one stumping.
His first professional engagement was at New Brompton CC in Kent. He also appeared for Grange CC and on their home ground at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh he played for Scotland v the West Indians in a first-class fixture in July 1906 scoring 0 and 31 and making a stumping. He captained Mansfield Colliery CC for 22 years, retiring due to an accident whilst working at the pit in 1934.
White was an excellent footballer who made 28 Football League and FA Cup appearances as a right full back for Nottingham Forest between 1901 and 1903. In May 1903 he moved to New Brompton FC, who subsequently became better known as Gillingham FC. He played for them for two seasons making 70 appearances in the Southern League and scoring three goals. He was also a talented billiards player. Born in New Annesley on 1 August 1877 and later moved to Mansfield where he died on 2 December 1958 aged 81.
