A right-arm fast bowler and right hand bat, Joseph Buxton was born in Kirkby in Ashfield on 20 November 1912. He played his early cricket for Bentinck Colliery and joined the Trent Bridge staff in 1937. His single match for Notts was against Gloucestershire on 29 31 May and 1 June when he captured one wicket (Charlie Barnett) for 90 over the two innings and scored six in his sole innings, he replaced the absent Bill Voce in the Eleven. The Nottingham Guardian noted: “His run-up was more intimidating than his pace, but his length was good and he could make the ball swing disconcertingly”.
He was offered a new contract for 1938, but declined and the rest of his cricket was played in and around his native town, where he resided all his life. He died in Mansfield Community Hospital on 10 February 1992.
His uncle Noah Buxton played seven First-Class games for Derbyshire between 1902-1911.
