Born on 8 November 1998 Sunderland, Co Durham, but very much a homegrown talent – he was educated at Worksop College – Liam Patterson-White has worked his way through the age groups whilst also learning his craft at Farnsfield CC.
His experience of representative cricket came very early – in June 2012 he was playing for Nottinghamshire Under-13s v Cumbria in the ECB County Competition for that age group. He continued to make appearances for county and ECB sides at Under-15, Under-17 and, eventually, was selected for the England Under-19 squad.
Liam made his international debut in a One-Day fixture against the Indian Under-19s in Mumbai in February 2017, taking one wicket for 35 runs. He played in two more ODIs and two Under-19 Test Matches on that tour and in three further one-dayers when the Indian team made a reciprocal visit to England later that year.
In 2018, and for most of the following year, he was a regular in the Notts Second Eleven, playing in the Championship and Trophy competitions, as well competing in the Nottinghamshire Premier League with Farnsfield. Also in that year, he played in a special one-off commemorative game to mark 150 years since the first Australian tourists played in England. That was a team of aboriginal cricketers and to mark the occasion a squad of current Australian players with aboriginal heritage was formed, under the captainship of Nottingham’s T20 skipper and talisman Dan Christian, to play a series of T20 games. In the Trent Bridge fixture, Liam took two wickets, caught another off the bowling of Chris Gibson and scored 16 runs, including one four and one six.
Patterson-White was given his First-Class debut in the Specsavers County Championship match at Taunton in July 2019. In the cruellest twist of fate, he spent one hour on the field before being taken ill with tonsillitis and rushed off to hospital. Returning later in the match, he made an unfortunate duck in his first innings before the left-arm spinner turned his luck around with a valuable five-wicket haul. He continued to take wickets and had the satisfaction of a maiden unbeaten fifty against Yorkshire at Scarborough, which helped him secure his first professional full-time contract.
With Samit Patel taking a step back from red-ball cricket in 2021, Liam Patterson-White was given the opportunity for an extended run in the First XI as the re-structured County Championship got under way. He played in the first five matches, showing his promise with a career-best 73no against Warwickshire and taking 4-114 v Worcestershire.
Liam's form was rewarded with a call-up to the England Lions tour of Sri Lanka in February 2023 when he played in two matches, taking seven wickets. His domestic season that followed was something of a set-back with injuries reducing his game time to just four County Championship matches and a full round of Metro Bank 50-over fixtures.
