After four years with Nottinghamhsire - he had previously represented Northants and Cumberland - Mark Bowen decided to retire from first-class cricket at the end of the 2000 season in order to pursue a career in the nuclear industry, for which his honours degree in chemical engineering made him well suited.
Playing primarily as a right arm fast-medium bowler, Bowen turned in some good performances with seven five-wicket hauls and one 'ten-fer'. His best performance was 7 for 73 v Somerset at Trent Bridge in 1998, in the previous season he returned very similar figures of 7 for 75 v Derbyshire, also at home.
His record in Sunday League cricket was 46 wickets at 30.58
