Scottish international ‘keeper Matthew Cross played his one first XI game for Notts in August 2013 in a 50-over match v Bangladesh A, making 47 as an opener – out at 108-4 – in a four-wicket win. He also took a catch off the bowling of Paul Franks and a stumping from slow bowler Sam Wood.
Cross, born in Aberdeen on 15 October 1992, bats right-handed and has represented his home country in One-Day Internationals, T20Is and List-A matches. He made a good impression as vice-captain of Scotland U19s during the 2012 U19 World Cup and later hit two half centuries as an aggressive opener to help Scotland qualify for the 2015 World Cup at the World Cup Qualifiers in New Zealand in 2014. He has juggled cricket with his degree in Engineering at Loughborough University, and represented Aberdeen Football Club at U15s level.
In addition to the Bangladesh game, Cross played for Nottinghamshire Second XI and for the Academy, in the county Premier League, between 2011 and 2014.
In 2019 he was selected to play for the Montreal Tigers franchise team in the Global T20 Canada tournament and for the Glasgow Giants in the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament. However, the following month that tournament was cancelled. In September 2019, he was named in Scotland's squad for the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in the United Arab Emirates
To date he has played nine First-Class matches, scoring 161 runs with a top score of 30 at an average 14.63 with 21 catches; in 90 ODIs, Cross has taken 118 catches and seven stumpings as well as scoring two centuries. He has a further 40 catches and 15 stumpings in international T20 games.
