Right-hand bat and off-spin bowler, Matthew Montgomery was born on 10 May 2000 in Johannesburg, South Africa and signed a contract with Notts until the end of the 2022 season on in July 2021. He had impressed whilst on trial with Notts' Second XI, scoring 147 against Warwickshire in an innings victory at the Edgbaston Foundation Community Sports Ground.
Montgomery has a German passport and is living in the UK on a Limited Leave to Remain Visa. He attended Clifton College in Durban, where he was extremely successful breaking many of the school’s batting records. He represented KwaZulu-Natal at all age groups. He also appeared in two domestic T20 matches for KwaZulu-Natal, scoring 30 not out in his only innings v KwaZulu-Natal Inland at Pietermaritzburg in September 2018
He then decided to pursue his cricket in England and had a highly successful 2019 season for Clifton Alliance CC in the Hunters Yorkshire Premier League North whose home venue is Clifton Park,York, where Montgomery subsequently played for Notts against Yorkshire in the Royal London Cup in August 2021, scoring an unbeaten 20 before rain intervened.
Matt Montgomery took up his studies at Loughborough University and switched his allegiance to Kegworth Town in the Leicestershire and Rutland Premier League; in the 2021 season he scored 814 runs @67.83 and took 38 wickets @14.94 in 17 appearances.
Matthew Montgomery made a good impression in Notts' Royal London One-Day Cup campaign, finishing second leading scorer with 200 runs @40.00 at a strike rate of 81.10. His top score of 35 came in his Notts List A debut v Warwickshire.
In 2023, Montgomery played regularly for the First Eleven and in the Outlaws 50-over side and the full programme of Vitality Blast matches, making his debut in that format against Derbyshirer when took one wicket and top scored with 51 as Notts romped home with three overs to spare.
He made history in July 2023 when he became the first player from Trent Bridge to represent Germany in any format of the game. He played in an ICC Men's World Cup European qualifier against Italy in Edinburgh, but this time finished on the losing side.
Montgomery's other claim to fame, or notoriety, is that when he made his First-Class debut for Notts, he took the squad number 666!
