Mick Haynes, who died of lung cancer at his home in Mapperley on 18 September 1997, was on the playing staff at Trent Bridge for three seasons commencing 1959.
A top-order right hand bat, he was born in Sherwood on 19 May 1936 and made a reputation for himself with Lenton United and in the representative Notts Cricket Association team. His father, Cecil Haynes, was for many years the Lenton wicket keeper and later a well-known local umpire.
Mick Haynes appeared in nine First-Class matches for Nottinghamshire, but with little success, making 119 runs at 7.93 with a top score of just 23, made twice, against Hampshire and v Yorkshire. He had his highest innings for a Notts team in July 1959 when he made 93 against an Australian Old Collegians XI – by some distance his best performance with the bat.
Haynes played primarily for Notts Second Eleven and a few games for the Club and Ground team, making more than fifty appearances at that level.
He left the staff to become a psychiatric nurse at Mapperley Hospital and played cricket for the Hospital side as well as for Nottingham Taxis.
His cheerful disposition was a feature of the Notts Old Players Reunions.
