Peter Plummer, born in Nottingham on 28 January 1947, bowled left-arm orthodox spin but batted right -handed. He began his time at Trent Bridge in 1966, aged just 19, and played in representative Under-23 and Under-25 sides as well as for the Second Eleven.
In 1969, he made his first team debut in a County Championship game against Warwickshire at Edgbaston; Notts declared both their innings so he was not required to bat – he was on the scorecard at number 11 – but he took two wickets in each Warwickshire innings. In all, he played 33 First-Class games for the county, mostly in the County Championship but he also played, in successive seasons, against the touring sides – Pakistan, India and Australia. Plummer also appeared in a dozen List-A games in the Sunday league and in limited-overs knockout competitions.
His First-Class record was 386 runs with a top score of 46, average 12.86; 63 wickets at 32.00 with a best return of 7-71 against Oxford University, one of his two five-wicket hauls. In List-A, he batted only six times, totalling 29 runs with 11no his highest; he also took 13 wickets at 25.46, 5-44 v Yorkshire being his best bowling in the short form of the game.
He left Notts at the end of the 1972 season and played in the Minor Counties competitions for Buckinghamshire. Plummer was also contracted as the professional for Burnley CC in the Lancashire League, playing more than 100 games for them between 1973 and 1978 and in nine Worsley Cup ties – twice helping them to a semi-final place.
After his cricket career he embarked on a career as a teacher of physical education. In the early 1990s he became the headteacher of Ellis Guilford School and Sports College in Basford, Nottingham, retiring from there in 2012, having had a brief spell as executive head.
