Born in Mansfield on 9 December 1983, Richard Hodgkinson is a right-hand batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler. Hodgkinson lived in Annesley and was educated at the local school and then West Notts College. His youth cricket was for Papplewick & Linby as well as the various Notts youth sides, commencing with the Under-11s. Hodgkinson was the leading wicket-taker for Notts Under-14s in 1998 but a back injury the following season meant that he missed several of the Under-15s county games.
At the age of 17, Hodgkinson made his debut for the Notts Cricket Board v Lincolnshire at Bourne in May 2001 in the ECB 38-County Cup (now as known the Minor Counties Trophy). During the 2001 and 2002 seasons, he represented the Board in seven games in the competition, taking 14 wickets @17.78; with a career best of 4-33 against Norfolk at Manor Park, Horsford in 2002. In August 2001 he made his List A debut for the Notts Cricket Board versus Oxfordshire at the Christ Church Ground at Oxford, opening the bowling he removed both openers, having figures of 8-1-36-2.
Hodgkinson made frequent appearances for Notts Seconds between 2001 and 2005; he played in 18 50-over Trophy games and 40 Second Eleven Championship games. He took 68 championship wickets @38.01 with his best bowling figures being 6-54 v Leicestershire at Trent Bridge in 2002. What surprised everyone that season, however, was his batting against Derbyshire at Dunkirk. Coming in at no 11, with Notts looking sure to lose the game, he hit an unbeaten 60 and with McMahon added 125 for the last wicket in just over two hours at the crease.
Hodgkinson’s sole appearance for the Notts first-team was a List A fixture in the 45-over Totesport League at New Road on 15th May 2005. Hodgkinson opened the bowling and removed Worcester skipper Vikram Solanki via a slip catch by Stephen Fleming, he finished with 8-0-42-1. Notts fell to a 16-run defeat with last man Hodgkinson bowled for a golden duck by Chaminda Vaas.
Hodgkinson left Trent Bridge at end of the 2005 season. Having made several appearances for Surrey Seconds in the interim, two years later, he made a single first-class appearance for Derbyshire. It was ironically at Trent Bridge in June 2007, a rain-ruined 4-day championship fixture. Hodgkinson was leg before to Charlie Shreck for six and he bowled 10-0-75-0.
Apart from a two season spell with Welbeck Colliery in 2004 and 2005, he played for Papplewick and Linby from 2003 to 2019.
