Roy Evatt Dexter, a right-hand bat born in Nottingham on 13 April 1955, was educated at Nottingham High School and graduated from there to the county cricket club.

He made his First-Class debut in the County Championship against Northamptonshire at Worksop in July 1975 but, with a score of 4 in his only innings, did not appear in the first team again until August 1977, when he played at Trent Bridge v Sussex. Dexter had played several games for Notts Second XI between 1970 and 1976 and was to make 69 appearances at that level in his time with the county.

His First-Class matches were infrequent, his most in a year being the eight he played in his final season of 1981, and he found the step-up hard to make.  In 22 games, he made 464 runs at 15.46 with a top score of 57, his only half-century, made against Cambridge University.

He was greatly valued by the Seconds, particularly in their unbeaten season of 1979, an achievement that was ‘due to a very dependable batting line-up, led by Nanan (Nirmal) and Dexter’.  Dexter also played four List-A games for Notts, all in the John Player League, scoring 64 runs with a best of 37no at 21.33.  In July 1974 he had one outing for England Under-19, against West Indies Young Cricketers at Stone in Staffordshire, in which he made 12, run out and 1, an early victim for Wayne Daniel who was also making his Under-19 international debut in that match.

Roy Dexter lives in Worksop and in 2015-16 was Director of Worksop Golf Club.
