Scott Newman came to Trent Bridge mid-way through the 2009 season on loan from his home county of Surrey. A hard-hitting left-handed opening batsman, Newman was made available for loan after a dip in his four-day form and some disciplinary issues, including a dispute with the umpires during Surrey’s game against Middlesex earlier that summer.
That ill discipline came to the fore in his second match for Nottinghamshire, versus Sussex at Horsham, when he was reported to the ECB by the match officials after he swiped down his stumps following his dismissal by off-spinner Ollie Rayner. Newman, who was on 25 at the time, was the second player in the match to be reported – Sussex batsman Ed Joyce was reprimanded for dissent in his side’s first innings.
Newman played seven First-Class games for Nottinghamshire before returning to Surrey; he scored 249 runs with a top score of 87, one of two half-centuries, at 22.63 in the County Championship. He was also selected for a home Pro40 league match against Yorkshire but did not bat as only 13 overs were possible because of bad weather.
Scott Newman had shown great promise in his early career at The Oval, making 99 on debut and 183 in his second match. In May 2005, he made history as the first Surrey player to hit consecutive innings of a century and a double century in the same game, against Glamorgan, the latter being his career-best 219. He did not sustain that form, which had earned him a place on the ECB Academy and a tour to India in 2003/4, and moved to Middlesex in the hopes of re-igniting his batting at the end of the 2009 season. At the start of the 2012 summer, his new county also sent him out on loan, to Kent, where he played six matches; he did not play First-Class cricket again thereafter.
In 2017 he set up the Scott Newman Academy to coach junior players, following brief spells running cricket coaching programmes in North Middlesex and West Hertfordshire.
