Thomas Broughton Charlton, son of the then Nottingham High Sheriff, was born and resided all his life at Chilwell Hall. His father William Charlton umpired some major matches in the 1820s but his playing career, if any, is not recorded
T B Charlton appeared in three Nottinghamshire games of 1840, and one in the season before for the MCC, with no great success - not called upon to bowl, he batted in seven innings for a highest score of 7no.
In 1841 he stood as Conservative candidate for the Borough of Nottingham in the general election, an ill-tempered campaign that provoked serious riots. Charlton failed to get elected and declined to stand again, due to the ill-feeling engendered.
He died in 1886 and is buried in Attenborough churchyard.
