Born in Eastwood on 29 October 1885, William Holmes was a right-arm medium pace bowler, right-hand bat and smart outfielder. Holmes played two games for Notts, making his First-Class debut versus Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on 4-5 July 1919, scoring 14 and taking 2-50. Two weeks later he faced Lancashire at Trent Bridge and scored 19 and bowled 2-55. He played club cricket for Eastwood CC and had professional engagements at St. Paul’s School, Downpatrick and Kilmarnock.
Employed as a Colliery deputy by Barber, Walker & Co, he moved from Eastwood to Doncaster where he died on 6 December 1951.
