William ‘Dusty’ Jackson, born in Basford on 5 August 1820, was a fast straight bowler, mainly with the Hyson Green club, from 1840 for a decade or so.
His First-Class debut was in 1844 for the Players of Nottinghamshire v the Gentlemen – the same game in which the great George Parr also made his debut – in which he scored 1no and 2no and took three wickets. He played for the North v MCC, for Nottingham against Sheffield and for Nottinghamshire versus Sussex, all in 1848. Jackson’s four First-Class games produced 11 wickets at 15.25 and 12 runs at an average of 6.00.
He played for and against the All England XI (AEE) and in a number of non-First-Class matches throughout the 1850s and made a final appearance in 1867 in a two-day one-innings fixture for the XXIII of Hull v AEE, making just 2. In 1853 he began a long stint as ground bowler at Christ Church, Oxford; he also played for Northumberland in 1861 and was coach at Repton School in 1866.
Dusty Jackson died in Nottingham in December 1886.
