Nottingham had little difficulty beating Sheffield by 153 runs in their only first-class fixture of 1832, which was played on 15, 16 and 17 October at the Hyde Park Ground in Sheffield.
Nottingham batting first made 124 with Tom Barker top scoring with 42. Sheffield replied with 52. Opener Thomas Heath scored 34 in Nottingham’s second innings of 132 and then Sheffield were 51 all out.
This match made the name of Sam Redgate, a 22 year old from Arnold, who caught out six and bowled out two others. His bowling delivery was the finest, easiest and most graceful ever seen and within a few seasons he was the best bowler in England, but his tenure at the top was brief, for he was a ‘very festive party’ and he died in 1851, leaving seven young children and no income for their support. His most famous feat came at Town Malling for England against Kent, when in a single four ball over he dismissed Kent’s three best batsmen, William Stearman, Alfred Mynn and Fuller Pilch.
